Paul VERLAINE (1844-1896). Autograph poem signed, Bonheur, P - Lot 367
Paul VERLAINE (1844-1896). Autograph poem signed, Bonheur, Paris April 28, 1887; 1 page in-8, important erasures and corrections. Beautiful sonnet, written during a stay of the poet at the Hôpital Cochin. It opens the collection Bonheur, published by Léon Vanier in 1891. [It was already in the hands of the publisher in May 1887, as testified by a letter of Verlaine: "You already have the first piece, erase the title "Bonheur" that you will replace by a simple N°1"...] Vanier followed these instructions, this manuscript indeed bearing the title Bonheur, which has been crossed out, and the mention "Bonheur 1ère pièce" at the bottom of the page, in blue pencil. It is also indicated in the lower right corner of the page, in blue ink, "Cochin 28 avril 87"... The manuscript presents erasures and corrections. "The incredible, unique horror of forgiving, When the offense and the wrong have had this scale, Is a royal effort which can make figure For the concern to please and the care to astonish "...
