Italian school of the XVIIth century, after John of Bologna - Lot 274
Italian school of the XVIIth century, after John of Bologna called 'Giambologna' (1529-1608) Cristo Morto Bronze with dark brown patina. Christ : Height 30 cm - Cross in wood : Total height 57 cm Hole in the back of the head for a missing halo. Related literature: Beatrice Paolozzi Strozzi, Dimitrios Zikos, Giambologna, gli dei, gli eroi, Museums of Florence, March 2006. This delicately chiseled bronze Christ derives from a model invented by the famous Flemish sculptor, active in Florence at the end of the sixteenth century, Giambologna. While two examples were cast by the master around 1588, it is to Antonio Susini and his workshop that we owe the most beautiful examples of this Christ of the "morto" type. The model was a huge success and was subsequently taken up by several generations of Italian founders, with varying degrees of variation in the details and quality of the casting.
