A rare tapestry from St. Petersburg made of wool, silk, and - Lot 148
A rare tapestry from St. Petersburg made of wool, silk, and silver-plated metal threads, depicting, in a central cartouche, Diana the Huntress, surrounded by scrollwork, foliage, and grotesques, dogs, birds, and cupids in the style of Bérain. Signed “Pierre Camousse, F. à St Pétersbourg” above the lower border. Russia, Saint Petersburg, circa 1730–1740. H. 240 – W. 360 cm Tsar Peter the Great’s (1672–1725) second trip to France took place in 1717. With a keen cultural curiosity, the tsar visited all the Royal Manufactories and decided, following the example of Louis XIV, to ensure Russia’s artistic independence by establishing its own manufactories there. Pierre Camousse, a tapestry weaver, settled in Saint Petersburg with this development in mind. The design of our tapestry is inspired by the drawings of Gilles-Marie Oppenord (1672–1742) and Jean Bérain the Elder (1640–1711), whose decorative repertoires were disseminated through collections of engravings.
