Beauvais - Lot 146
Beauvais A rare wool and silk tapestry depicting, against a tobacco-colored background, a rich “grotesque” composition featuring dancing musicians and a figure playing the trumpet seated on an elephant draped with a lambrequin. The ensemble stands out against a simulated paving perspective and double staircases framing a foliage frieze, punctuated by canopied architectural elements or colonnades with elongated sphinxes, embellished with vine tendrils, quivers, drapery, flower and leaf garlands, and surmounted by a frieze of canopy architecture, birds, and bat wings in the corners. The scene is framed by a border imitating a frame with quatrefoil and shell motifs. Made in Beauvais after a design by Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer (1634–1699), inspired by an engraving by Jean I Bérain (1640–1711). Louis XIV period, late 17th or early 18th century. H. 310 - W. 421 cm Signs of wear, restoration.
