Very fine proof, freshly colored, on thin vellum, addressed to Kleinmann, 8 rue de la Victoire. May Belfort (circa 1872-1929) was an Irish singer and actress, who performed at the Café des Décadents and the Petit Casino. She commissioned Lautrec to produce this famous poster showing her in a red dress, holding her black cat. She became one of the artist's favorite models. She played in a childlike register, wearing a bonnet and high-waisted dress on stage, which won her great popularity. She based her brief career on the saucy song "J'ai un petit chat, et j'aime beaucoup ça". D. 354 - W. P14. 797 x 622 mm Very slight yellowing of the folio on an upper strip of the subject, inf. lacks on the edges of the large margins.
