HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Aristide Bruant at the - Lot 18
HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Aristide Bruant at the Ambassadors. 1892. Poster with high canvas. Lithograph, printed in color using two stones. A superb print with very fresh colors and a great homogeneity in the junction of the blues of the coat and the pinks of the scarf, which is rather rare. "Bruant left boulevard Rochechouart and started at Les Ambassadeurs on June 3, 1892. The man in the black felt hat and red scarf, who enchanted snobs in Montmartre by "yelling at them", also had great success doing his act in the café-concerts on the Champs-Elysées. Bruant, who had known Lautrec for a long time, had asked him for this poster, which Ducarre, the director of Les Ambassadeurs, was very reluctant to accept, on condition that he paid neither for the design nor for the print run. According to Gauzi, it was not Bruant who launched Lautrec, but rather the opposite: his poster, a brutal black and red stain on a white background, made "his silhouette known throughout Paris". (J. Adhémar) D., 343 - W., P4. 1365 x 957 mm Small restored tear at lower left penetrating 3.5 cm into subject, broken folds and slight tear in lower right corner, pinholes in folds.
