HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Reine de Joie. 1892. - Lot 17
HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Reine de Joie. 1892. Canvas poster. Lithograph, printed in color. Superb proof, large margins and very fresh. Ancourt imp. Paris. Extremely rare in such fine condition. One of the artist's poster masterpieces. It was executed to announce the publication of his friend Victor Joze's novel "Reine de Joie. Moeurs du demi-monde", part of the series to which the writer gave the title "La Ménagerie sociale". A young woman, the book's heroine, He'le`ne Roland, kisses her boss, the ventripotent banker Olizac, on the nose during a dinner party. It caused a scandal in banking circles: "Some young stockbrokers tore it off the walls, others bribed the stickers who gave them the posters, and two of them were arrested" (J. Adhe'mar). This poster, in the curves of its calligraphy and the curve of its decanter, bears witness to the birth of Art Nouveau. Delteil, 342 - Wittrock, P3. Sheet size: 1446 x 987 mm Very good condition. Fairly marked horizontal median crease in the blacks on the left-hand side, broken crease at the bottom of the subject at the level of the last two letters, small marginal tears, spots of paper discoloration in the left-hand margin at the bottom of the subject.
