With a certificate signed by Louise Bourgeois, issued by Louise Bourgeois studio. toi et moi" (you and me) is the expression Louise Bourgeois uses to evoke the simplest of human relationships, the one produced by the coming together of two individuals, be it an ordinary meeting or a lifelong marriage. For Louise Bourgeois, "you and me" represents one of life's most important and difficult experiences. For her, making a commitment to another person is a great source of anxiety, but she is convinced that, without this contact, life is not worth living. As she said in an interview with Robert Storr in 1986, "Jean-Paul Sartre said in Huis Clos: 'Hell is other people'. I say that hell is the absence of others - that's what hell is." The "you and me" symbolizes the potentiality of a perfect, harmonious geometry, but it also implies the end of this harmony when a third person appears. Three-way relationships destabilize the artist because they remind him of the harm that can be caused by the unequal sharing of love and affection.
