Roger de la FRESNAYE (1885 - 1928) Portrait of Jean Cocteau, - Lot 49
Roger de la FRESNAYE (1885 - 1928) Portrait of Jean Cocteau, 1920. Graphite signed and dated lower left. Height 31.5 - Width 23.5 cm Provenance : - Luc-Albert Moreau Collection, - Acquired circa 1946, - Private collection, then by descent. Roger de La Fresnaye, Jean Cocteau and Luc-Albert Moreau belonged to a generation of artists who, in the wake of the avant-gardes, sought a new balance between modernity and tradition. Bound by friendship and the same spiritual demands, they shared a vision of art as a place of unity between form, poetry and inner life. Cocteau, a poet of correspondence, found in Moreau a sensitive interpreter, while La Fresnaye translated, through the rigor of cubism, the clarity of a reconstructed world. All three embody the ideal of a measured French modernity, where emotion, thought and beauty come together in the same breath.
