Buddha head in reddish-brown stone, featuring a rounded face - Lot 184
Buddha head in reddish-brown stone, featuring a rounded face with half-closed eyes, conveying an impression of profound serenity. The wavy curls of hair evoke blossoming lotus flowers, with a slight protrusion of the cranial protuberance. The well-defined eyebrows are set back from the bridge of a fine, straight, harmonious nose, contrasting subtly with the gentle curves of the eyelids and delicately slanted, fluidly traced eyes. The prominent, slightly lined chin reinforces the facial expression, while the small mouth, pinched into a discreet smile, reveals full lips. The long ears, attentive to the sufferings of the world, testify to great wisdom. China, Tang period (618-907 A.D.). On a black marble base. Height: 24 cm Numbers on back n° 3; 31 and 5487 mission inventories (?) Old restorations to the nose and brow bone. The influence of Gupta art in Tang statuary This head reflects the Buddhist-influenced iconographic characteristics conveyed by the Silk Road from West to East. Gupta art developed in India under the Gupta Empire (circa 320-550 AD), characterized by the humanization of the divine figure, particularly in representations of Buddha. This approach was taken up by Tang artists, who sought to make Buddha accessible as a human spiritual guide. Cultural, commercial and religious exchanges enabled Gupta art to influence representations of Buddha in the Dunhuang caves, sculptures in the Longmen caves, and other major Buddhist centers in Tang China.
