ORIGINAL EDITIONS, constituting the complete series of L'Histoire contemporaine, a key work by Anatole France and almost impossible to find, reunited in its entirety in the first edition. ONE OF 30 EXEMPLIES ON IMPERIAL PAPER FROM JAPAN numbered (40 and 60 for the last two volumes). The series is enriched by an exceptionally interesting AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIT, signed in the form of a letter (5 p. in-4), an autobiography addressed to the famous German publisher ("Simplessisimus", works with covers illustrated by Steinlen, etc.) Albert Langen, who published it in German in his catalog in 1904. This manuscript includes numerous erasures and corrections, reflecting France's quest for perfection in the use of the French language: Je suis né sur le quai Malaquais, en face du Louvre, parmi les trésors de la science et de l'art. My father was a bookseller My father read a lot. He didn't become rich. I had vast curiosities from an early age. I wanted to know everything. Perhaps that's why I didn't become a scholar. I won't tell you anything about my studies. In my opinion, there is only one school for to train the mind. I've been told I write well. If that's true, I can think of two reasons. Firstly, I've listened a lot to tradesmen and commoners. They are our masters of language. They speak naturally. People of the world and professors, on the other hand, use poor, artificial language. Another reason why I haven't written badly is that I've never thought of adorning my sentences, and have always applied myself solely to rendering my thoughts accurately. I was attached to the Senate Library. I didn't waste my time there, as I learned about politics and made observations that enabled me to deal with a fair number of social issues in my own way. Commenting on the Dreyfus affair and politics, he adds: "I'm not fooled for a moment by the criminals on the general staff, who multiplied perjuries and forgeries to lose an innocent man. I thus found myself in sympathy with that great fraction of French socialism which understood that a great social movement could emerge from the affair of a little Jewish captain. I have always loved the poor and honored work. I watch with keen interest the efforts of the universal proletariat to achieve emancipation. I know that this emancipation will be the work of the proletarians themselves, and I like to repeat the words "The union of workers will be the peace of the world". RARISSIME IN SEMBLABLE CONDITION, freshly and perfectly bound by Alix, enriched by an autograph of exceptional interest, this one in-4, enclosed in a price-marked cat. from M. France (Anatole's brother), bookseller, quai Voltaire, in a matching half-chagr. slipcase, gilt title on spine. Talvart, VI, pp. 144, 145, 146.
