GRASSET (Eugène). Histoire des Quatre fils Aymon, Très noble - Lot 80
GRASSET (Eugène). Histoire des Quatre fils Aymon, Très nobles et très vaillants Chevaliers. Introduction and notes by Charles Marcilly. Paris, H. Launette, 1883. In-4, dark brown morocco, large incised and tinted leather inset on each board, wide inner border decorated with a mosaic mask at each corner, blue brocaded silk lining and endpapers, gilt edges, double illustrated covers and spine, slipcase (Ch. Meunier, 1894). Deluxe edition of 200 copies (100 on japon impérial and 100 on chine), this one is ONE OF THE FIRST 100 ON IMPERIAL JAPON, numbered. CELEBRATED ILLUSTRATED BOOK BY Eugène Grasset, the first printed in color using a new photogravure and chromography process invented by Charles Gillot. With the utmost freedom, Grasset composed a lavish illustration of historiated frames, reminiscent in its architecture of medieval manuscripts. His compositions, which cover the book's 242 pages, invade the text, in a complete break with the canons of the illustrated book of the time. The book is thus a precursor of Art Nouveau. At the end of the volume, two different illustrated flyers for the edition. BINDING BY CHARLES MEUNIER, DECORATED WITH INCISED AND COLORED LEATHER. Charles Meunier and Marius Michel rivaled each other in invention when it came to decorating incised leather, an ancestral technique they both favored for the binding of this book with its medieval subject.
