An inlaid cube sideboard with a central recess and curved si - Lot 124
An inlaid cube sideboard with a central recess and curved sides, opening to a drawer and a door. Very fine ornamentation of gilded bronzes: frames, rosettes, friezes and fluting, falls with musical trophies and claw feet. Peach blossom marble top with triple molding. Stamped by GROHE in Paris. Circa 1870 - 1880. Height 126 - Width 125 - Depth 49 cm Provenance: Drouot sale, November 20, 1970. The brothers Guillaume and Jean-Michel Grohé are among the greatest cabinetmakers of the 19th century. Their work is sumptuous and of the highest quality. Grohé supplied Louis-Philippe, Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, the Duc d'Aumale for Chantilly, and the wealthy bourgeoisie. Our sideboard, also called "à hauteur d'appui", is part of a small series of furniture made by Grohé, all different. This new format of Napoleon III furniture - with one door and one drawer - was inspired by royal commissions to Riesener (in particular for Marie-Antoinette) and reinterprets the projecting front, arched sides and rich bronze ornamentation and feet.
