Attributed to Pieter de HOOCH (1629-1684) The Concert on a Terrace. Canvas. Gilded frame. Height 67 - Width 80 cm Restoration. A version with a few variations of our painting, from the Jonas Lek collection, was sold in Amsterdam in 2001 (Sotheby's sale, November 6, 2001, no. 33, canvas, 56.5 x 69.4 cm). In the catalog raisonné of the Works of Pieter de Hooch, Peter Sutton mentions several sales in the 18th and 19th centuries. However, differences in the dimensions given allow Sutton to suggest the existence of a second painting (approx. 66 x 76 cm), perhaps ours? The composition and style of our painting are similar to those of Pieter de Hooch's late career, after 1680, a period in which the artist favored music and dance subjects, in an interior of bourgeois luxury open to the outside, with, as here, a view of a canal lined with houses at sunset. Wilhelm Valentiner likens the Amsterdam version to La Partie musicale at the Museum of Art in Indianapolis (Musical company in a distinguished interior, canvas, 92.7 x 109.8 cm) and La Chanson d'amour at the Fondation Bemberg in Toulouse (Couple playing music, canvas, 57 x 65.5 cm).
