(1688). In-12, green morocco, triple gilt thread and corner finial, ornate spine, inner dent, gilt tr. (Derome).
ORIGINAL EDITION, very rare, of this satirical piece with a curious unsigned engraved frontispiece, reprinted the following year in 28 pages instead of the 32 in this edition.
The author of this violent satire, a Benedictine monk from Saint-Denis who had taken refuge in Holland under the name of La Fond, was betrayed and transported to Mont Saint-Michel, where he died in the same cage in which he had lived - a terrible punishment for a satire. It was directed against Louis XIV, Madame de Maintenon, Madame Scarron, Cardinal d'Estrées and Louvois, Archbishop of Reims. The author refers to archbishops and bishops as Cochons mitrés (mitred pigs).
SUPERB EXAMPLE, in a fine, fresh binding by Derome le jeune, with its label and quoted by Brunet.
