Preceded by a literary note on Ch. Perrault, by M.E. de la Bédollière. Paris, Curmer, 1843. Large in-8, garnet half-maroquin with corners, 5-rib finely decorated spine, untrimmed, ill. cover and spine preserved (Champs). FIRST EDITION. General frontispiece, individual frontispieces at the head of each of the nine stories and numerous vignettes, headpieces and lamp-ends, all engraved with burin on steel after Pauquet, Marvy, Jeanron, Jacque and Beaucé. Text engraved by Blanchard on heavy wove paper. Each leaf interleaved with thin white paper. A superb edition, entirely engraved with the exception of the introductory leaves, undoubtedly the finest early edition of Perrault's tales and one of the finest illustrated books of the 19th century, rare in fine condition. A very fine copy, bound by Champs around 1880, at full margins and with its attractive illustrated cover printed in violet, perfectly preserved.
