EXCEPTIONAL ENSEMBLE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION OF THE TIME (despite some foxing), with its extremely rare illustrated cover, of the most important caricatures relating to this character of Mayeux, a total of 128 lithographs in very fine period colors (except for 3 plates outside the series, in black), most of them drawn and lithographed by C.-J. Traviès (l'L'Louvre).J. Traviès (one was copied or inspired Daumier, see Delteil, 15), others unsigned or signed by Delaporte, Forest, Granville, Philipon, Robillard... Finally, one is an original lithograph by Daumier (unsigned early work, but described and reproduced by
Delteil, (No. 22) as very rare, the only proof cited being that in the Cabinet des Estampes. All these lithographs are carefully described by Félix Meunié: Les Mayeux (P., Leclerc, 1915). Some of these pieces are of interest to different professions: Lawyers, Journalists, Hatters, Milliners, Hairdressers, Doctors, Pharmacists, Tailors... or represent gallant scenes, gastronomy, dancing... he belongs between Robert Macaire and Mr Prudhomme. Monsieur Mayeux, a coarse, libidinous hunchback created by Traviès to embody all the faults of the bourgeoisie under Louis-Philippe. In turn, he took on the ridiculous roles of the most cowardly and cocardier national guard, the most muddled politician, the most unfaithful husband, the most fat and passionate lover.
