Large in-8, contemporary binding in green chagrin, boards decorated with a frame of 4 gilt and cold-stamped fillets with fleurons inside the corners, ornate spine, inner frame decorated with gilt fillets, white embossed paper lining and endpapers, gilt edges (Blaise). FIRST ISSUE, WITH ENGLISH FILET AND PRINTERS' NAMES IN LITTLE CHARACTER 55 plates hors texte, including an engraved title, i.e. 21 steel engravings and 34 woodcuts after drawings by Edouard de Beaumont, Boulanger, Daubigny, Tony Johannot, Lemud , Meissonier, Roqueplan, Rudder and Steinheil. Numerous woodcuts in the text. Autograph letter from Victor Hugo added, addressed to publisher Perrotin (1844). 1 p. in-8 with address. This letter marks Victor Hugo's meeting with the publisher of the illustrated edition of Notre-Dame de Paris. The poet recalls having met Perrotin some ten years ago at Tony Johannot's house, and looks forward to a new relationship between them. The finest illustrated edition of this famous novel. "Remarkable publication, rare in fine condition, which can be sought after as the prototype of the great text illustrated by the artists of the time. great text illustrated by the artists of its time" (Carteret, III, p. 304).
