ORIGINAL EDITION, printed by Crapelet of the first state of the Paris edition, bearing on the verso of the title the words "Les formalités d'usage requises ont été observées, nous poursuivrons le contrefacteur.
Treuttel et Würtz" and with the errors on pages 23, 93, 121 and especially those that are only in the Parisian edition (pp. 82: vive, for life and contrainte, instance for insistence, three times, pp. 115, 163 and 199). Adolphe is a novel in a class of its own in Constant's work, analyzing psychological responsibility in matters of love and questioning the reader about Adolphe's role in the breakdown of his relationship with Ellénore. ORIGINAL SECOND EDITION (despite the third edition notice). This edition, dated 1824, contains an unpublished preface by the author of considerable importance. The many corrections made to the original 1816 text make this the first ne varietur version of the work.
