CONSTANT (Benjamin). Adolphe, anecdote found in the papers of an unknown man. P., Treuttel et Würtz, London, Colburn, 1816. In-12 (170x 96 cm), havana half calf, corners, ornate spine, jasp. tr. (Contemporary binding). ORIGINAL EDITION, printed by Crapelet of the first state of the Paris edition, bearing on the verso of the title the words "Les formalités d'usage requises ont été observées, nous poursuivrons le contrefacteur. Treuttel et Würtz" and with the errors on pages 23, 93, 121 and especially those that are only in the Parisian edition (pp. 82: vive, for life and contrainte, instance for insistence, three times, pp. 115, 163 and 199). Adolphe is a novel in a class of its own in Constant's work, analyzing psychological responsibility in matters of love and questioning the reader about Adolphe's role in the breakdown of his relationship with Ellénore. (In French, 225 ): "Avec Adolphe, Benjamin Constant a donné un des romans les plus beaux de la littérature française, un des plus mystérieux, des plus provocateurs qu'on ait written".
