A12. Sonia DELAUNAY (1885-1979). L.A. (end missing?), Grasse - Lot 12
A12. Sonia DELAUNAY (1885-1979). L.A. (end missing?), Grasse May 15, 1944, to her "dear André"; 2 pages in-4. Beautiful and long letter about abstract painting and Robert Delaunay. She first evokes the "dark hours" of November 1941 (after the death of her husband); thanks to "devoted friendships" she was able to get out of the "abyss of despair. She reacts to an article by her correspondent in Présent about abstract painters: "any painter - who composes his painting, starting from a subject taken from nature, breaks it down according to a geometric or other principle, in such a way as to render the subject illegible, that is to say, uses it only as a source of inspiration - is an abstract painter. From the definition, you can see that there are many abstract painters in modern French and foreign painting. The era of Robert's Window series is an era of abstract painting. But in 1912-13 he began the "Circular Forms". In these paintings he abandoned nature as a source of inspiration and created new rhythms with shapes and colors. With the "Circular Forms" he is the first in France to make inobjective painting (in Germany at the same time Kandinsky took the same path with a different expression)"... Then she responds to criticism of the evolution of Robert Delaunay... We join a L.A.S. of Marcel ARLAND (1946) on the painting and the abstract art.
