CARTIER
CARTIER, Tank Cintrée: 18k (750) gold wristwatch. Rectangular case with screw closure, faceted sapphire winding crown, EJ master and French warranty marks with eagle head, triple numbering, one on each handle and the last stamped on the top of the case. Dial with Roman numerals and minute track. Hand-wound mechanical movement signed Cartier Inc., 18 jewels, adjusted to 3 positions. 18k (750) gold folding clasp numbered 1722 2 and bearing a master's mark. No. 47459 / 688 / 01? Dim. 23 x 46 mm - Gross weight 44.6 g. Unsigned clasp, visible oxidation on the plate. This watch is part of a small production of the 1960s, it is in the continuity of the first Tank Cintrée produced by the house of Cartier in the Art Deco period, which are considered today as an example of beauty and refinement, as evidenced by the one worn by the actor Rudolf Valentino. Four years after the birth of the first Tank de Cartier, it was followed by the Tank Cintrée in 1921, which combined the ergonomic curved case profile of the Tonneau with the Tank's more modern stretchers, which were inspired by the early armored vehicles seen on the front lines of World War I. Featuring larger case sizes and designs, this whole revolutionary creative process in watch design with the famous Tank Cintrée went against the norm of watch culture at the time, also spurred on by the Roaring Twenties. Our example is a more contemporary but equally rare post-war version, produced during the 1960's, notably for the London or Paris boutique, the difference being the warranty hallmarks and the stock numbering which is not the same from one capital to the other. The numbering is still well on the back of our example, some numbers are difficult to read, but the marking is well struck which is a sign of quality conservation for the eye of the informed collector. The "EJ" hallmark being that of Edmond Jaeger, it testifies to a golden age in the manufacture of fine wristwatches at Cartier, especially with their joint work for the manufacture of Swiss movements most often signed. Our example with this five-digit numbering on the back "47459" is part of one of the last productions of the house of Cartier under the impulse of the family, before it became a brand owned by an international luxury group. It is interesting to note that the last examples sold at auction, mainly in Geneva, were all numbered higher than ours, which probably dates from the beginning of production in the 1960s. Carefully preserved by its owner, this example of a mid-1960s Tank Cintrée is a rare opportunity to find a piece with a beautiful original patina on the case as well as on the dial, the vintage Tank in essence.
