LOUIS XV 1715-1774 - Lot 868
LOUIS XV 1715-1774 Bronze medal, dated 1740. Treaty of alliance signed in Switzerland. Restitution of Basel (55 mm). Engraver : Dassier. Superb. Treaty of Alliance signed in Basel in Switzerland for the Tranquility of Europe after the intervention of France. Originally from Lyon, the Dassier family took refuge in Geneva during the Saint Bartholomew's Day. Jean Dassier (1676-1763) was appointed engraver of the Mint of the Republic of Geneva. His brother Paul (1681-1768) was also a medalist. In 1703, Jean Dassier married Anne Prévost-Gaudy and had two sons, Jacques-Antoine (1715-1759) and Antoine (1718-1780), also medalists. Antoine was the father of Pierre Dassier, a general in the service of France and the ancestor of Gustave Ador, president of the Swiss Confederation in 1919-1920. The Dassiers were the only medal makers of their century to be mentioned in the Encyclopedia of Diderot and d'Alembert.
