CHARLES LE BRUN 1619-1690 first painter of the king - Lot 865
CHARLES LE BRUN 1619-1690 first painter of the king Medal in bronze, dated 1684 (55 mm). TNG XXIV,2. Very nice. Charles Le Brun (Paris, 1619-1690) was sent to Rome where he became friends with Poussin of Lyon. Returning to France in 1648, he entered the Academy of Painting. While working at Vaux-le-Vicomte for the superintendent Fouquet, he was noticed by Mazarin who introduced him to King Louis XIV. In 1662, Colbert had him appointed first painter to the king and gave him a pension equal to that paid by Fouquet. For fourteen years he was in charge of the Gallery of Paintings at Versailles. At the death of Colbert he fell into disgrace.
