LOUIS XIV 1643-1715 - Lot 863
LOUIS XIV 1643-1715 Bronze medal with a juvenile bust, 1667. Inauguration of the Paris Observatory (50 mm). Jones 244-245; TNG XI,2. Engraver: not signed Mollart. Small dings on the edge. Very nice. The Paris Observatory was born from the project, in 1667, to create an astronomical observatory equipped with good instruments allowing to establish maps for navigation. Complementing the Academy of Sciences founded in 1666, it played a very important role in Western astronomy. It is there that sciences such as geodesy, cartography and meteorology took off in France. It is the oldest observatory in the world still in operation.
