LOUIS XIV 1643-1715 - Lot 862
LOUIS XIV 1643-1715 Two single-sided bronze plates representing two battlefields in the presence of King Louis XIV. Engraver : Martin Van den Bogaert known as Martin Desjardins. Holes of suspension. Superb. The arrival of Louis XIV at the camp before Maastricht (1673). The siege of Maastricht was one of the main episodes in Louis XIV's plan to invade the Netherlands in 1673 during the Dutch War in order to avenge the role of the Triple Alliance during the War of Devolution. The siege, which began on the 13th, ended on June 30 with a French victory. The Conquest of Franche-Comté (1674) represents King Louis XIV and Vauban who organized the second conquest of Franche-Comté in May-June 1674, here illustrated by the capture of the city of Besançon, then a free city, distinct from the county of Burgundy (Franche-Comté). The siege of Besançon was one of the many victorious military operations carried out in Franche-Comté that led to the definitive attachment of this Spanish province to the Kingdom of France.
