ITALY - IOVANNI BENTIVOGLIO 1443-1506 Bronze medal with armed rider, undated. (76 mm). Engraver : Sperandio. Late casting. Retouched fields. T.B. Giovanni II Bentivoglio or John II Bentivoglio (February 12, 1443 - February 15, 1508), condottiere and heir of the Bentivoglio family, became prince of Bologna, a city he governed for over 40 years (1462-1506). Giovanni was the son of Annibal of Bentivoglio and Donnina Visconti, and therefore the nephew of Philip Mary Visconti. He was knighted at the age of 9. After the death of his uncle Sante, in order to save the appearances of the defense of the republican liberties, he accepted the office of gonfalonier of justice. Pope Paul II appointed him head of the Senate for life (with the right to have two votes in the elections), as well as pontifical vicar of the city and of its contado. He was lord of the city when he was only twenty years old. Bartolomeo Sperandio Savelli (1431-1504) also called Sperandio of Mantua.
