ITALY - JOHN VII THE PALEOLOGIST, emperor of Byzantium 1423- - Lot 831
ITALY - JOHN VII THE PALEOLOGIST, emperor of Byzantium 1423-1448 Undated medal (1438) in bronzed pewter (102 mm). Armand 7,20; Hill 19; TNG V,1. Engraver: Pisanello. Later casting. Repolished fields. T.B. John VII the Palaeologus was born in 1390, was associated with his father Manuel in 1419 and succeeded him in 1425. Pisanello executed this medal while he was in Florence during the council presided over by the pope. Back in Constantinople, attacked by his brother Demetrius, this prince who had known how to make himself loved by his subjects, died of grief in 1448. This medal is considered the oldest cast medal of the Renaissance, making Pisanello the first medal maker in history whose identity is known. Pisanello, whose real name was Antonio di Puccio da Cereto, was born in Verona around 1395 and died in Rome around 1455. He was a painter, medalist and illuminator of the Italian Renaissance and the Quattrocento, the last representative of the international Gothic style. He painted the portraits of most of the princes and illustrious men of his time.
