Jean-François-Paul de Gondi, cardinal de RETZ (1613-1679), cardinal, archbishop of Paris, opponent of Mazarin and leader of the Fronde; writer and memorialist. L.A.S., Commercy July 3, 1670, to M. DE LA FONS; 2 1/4 pages in-4, addressed with black wax seals with arms on purple silk lakes. Controller at the Chambre des Comptes, M. de la Fons manages the revenues of the cardinal de Retz, who in July 1670 has just returned to Commercy, after 4 months spent in Rome for the conclave. He had the cardinal ALTIERI [CLEMENT X] elected against the candidate of Louis XIV, the cardinal Albizzi, friend of Mazarin. He charges him with a letter for Modane... "we will regulate so well all things when you will be here that I will not leave any care neither to him nor to another to make the things without you"... He waits for it with great impatience, but orders him: "given you however all the necessary time to regulate what your presence can be useful for the order of Commerci. It would be better to postpone your trip for a few days in order to move things forward. I don't know if I forgot in my last letter to ask you to solicit in my name those of Mme de VERDUN's judges whom you know to be friends of mine Goutrai [Gaultray?] asks me to give him two more pounds in addition to his pension, please do so, I beg you, it will be as much less for the following year"... He sends him a letter for Mmes de Saint-Germain and de Charmont; 8 lines follow, very carefully cancelled...
