Marie-Madeleine Pioche de La Vergne, countess of LAFAYETTE ( - Lot 337
Marie-Madeleine Pioche de La Vergne, countess of LAFAYETTE (1634-1693), woman of letters, author of La Princesse de Clèves. 2 L.A., [Paris 1655-1662], to Abbé Gilles MENAGE in Paris; 2 pages in-4, addressed with red wax seals on blue silk lakes, and 1 page in-4; old copies enclosed. Beautiful and friendly letters. 13 February [1655] (the day before his wedding). "It seemed to me by the answer my father-in-law gave me that he had found one of my letters a little dry but he nevertheless gave me the most obliging answer in the world and testified very well that he had no intention to hurt me. I do not think we should take his house, firstly because it is not at all suitable for lodging and secondly because of the neighbourhood which is very far from the people I see and very far from all the places where the litigants have business. If you could come about to persuade me that it is a mark of friendship to write negligently to a person you would do a very difficult thing"... She is sorry for the evil of Miss de Scudéry, is angry not to have the book of Mr. Caostar. She finishes: " I do not leave you to go to the ball I am all alone in my house and find pleasant to be because everyone is in company these days ". [April 12, 1662]. "When you would have been informed that I had a fever the last two nights you would not have sent me news more appropriately, but my fever is nothing and did not prevent me yesterday from going to the course with Monsieur. Mr. de la Fayette is so pleased with your care that it is not necessary to apologize to him for an ordinary that you missed. The Marquis de RICHELIEU died yesterday evening, he was about my age, which should frighten me"... One joined a L.A. (signed of a farmer, and in Latin MENAGIUS in the text) of MÉNAGE to Pierre-Daniel HUET, Paris July 12, 1661 (2 p. small in-4), with a poem in Latin Italica sua mittit Academicis Florentinis.
