Charles-François, comte de BROGLIE (1719-1781), diplomat, Fr - Lot 311
Charles-François, comte de BROGLIE (1719-1781), diplomat, French ambassador to Poland. Louis XV entrusted him with the direction of the Secret Ministry. L.S., Warsaw, October 24, 1757, to Prince de SOUBISE; 2 pages in-fol. Seven Years War. The Prussian army withdraws in a deplorable state and goes "to Pomerania and Brandenburg". He comments on the maneuvers of the Russian marshal Apraxine, and of Lewald (Lehwaldt), commander of the Prussian forces. "It is quite extraordinary to see in the course of a month a victorious army fleeing before its enemy and shortly afterwards this same enemy imitating this example and withdrawing himself from a Country which he seems not to want any more from the moment that one does not dispute it any more. To make these events even more singular, it is only necessary to see the Kingdom of Prussia delivered to its own forces without any army being determined to seize it. In addition, I do not pretend to compare the conduct of M. de Lewald to that of M. Apraxin, it can result in advantageous things for the King of Prussia from the march of his troops against the Swedes and certainly the maneuvers of the Russians can only cover them with shame"...
