Jacques-Bénigne BOSSUET (1627-1704), prelate, theologian, pr - Lot 308
Jacques-Bénigne BOSSUET (1627-1704), prelate, theologian, preacher and writer; bishop of Meaux. L.A.S., Germigny, August 13, 1693, to Mme d'ALBERT; 4 pages small in-4. Beautiful letter of spiritual direction. [Henriette d'ALBERT de Luynes (1647-1699) was a nun of the abbey of Jouarre, of which Bossuet was the spiritual director]. "I very much approve, my daughter, of your entering into this spirit of particular sequestration in which you believe God is leading you. I believe it as much as you do. Self-love, which can find its own way, must not prevent you from surrendering to this attraction. Our weaknesses do not prevent the truth and it is no less sovereign, even if it is mixed with something of our own. On the contrary, it is a way of honoring the truth to remove it from all that accompanies it and to follow it. So do it: but be careful to do it in such a way that no one will notice your intention. Withdraw little by little. I pray to God that he will cover you with his wings. He urges her to break off a "beginning of attachment" and to retain Mme de Maubourg: "she would be failing in her vocation and in God's work by withdrawing, but she must be urged to do so gently without causing too much pain to the person [...] We must help weakness with a little condescension. Then he continues his advice: "Sacrifice to God the tenderness of your heart which has brought tears to your eyes. Do not have a heart for anything but God, nor tears for anything but your sins and the banishment from the holy city. God will give you this holy leisure where unoccupied of the creature you will be all to you to be all to him ".... One joined 2 pages (pag. 3 and 4) of a draft of sermon on the Worship.
