Ile-de-France, mid-14th century - Lot 258
Ile-de-France, mid-14th century Virgin and Child Fort-relief in white marble. Height: 57 cm Head and left arm of the Child missing, head of the Virgin modern and disassociated from the body, restorations and accident to the left foot of Christ. This delicate marble Virgin and Child presents all the characteristics of 14th century French art: its iconographic subject, its precious material, its quiet and refined style, and its small size. All these elements define the "Art courtois" diffused during this period to meet the demand of a sumptuous clientele at the court of the Valois. The silhouette is elegantly swaying, the attitude of the child's feet is dancing, the end of the cloak-veil draws a beautiful almost horizontal line on the front of the thighs and falls in long lateral falls of cascading folds, according to a poncification very appreciated by the sculptors of the time. A widespread iconographic detail in representations of the Virgin and Child, the bird held by the Child, usually symbolically announces the coming sacrifice of Christ. Related literature: - Ss dir.
