Raphael DELORME (1886-1962) - Lot 106
Raphael DELORME (1886-1962) Ancient vision, c. 1925 Isorel signed lower right and titled on the back. Height 37 - Width 54 cm Accidents to the frame. Provenance : Sale London, Nov. 4, 1999, n° 481. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, Raphael Delorme was one of the masters of Art Deco painting. A theater decorator, he gave up the profession to devote himself exclusively to painting, but he kept a taste for decor that is reflected in the very studied staging of his compositions. Despite his intense activity, Delorme did not meet with the success he had hoped for and boasted of having only one client, the Maharajah of Kapurthala. Without doubt exaggerated, this freedom allowed him to create a very original work that features classical nude figures, within very constructed, sometimes strange settings. He often made the frames of his works, which seems to be the case for our painting.
