MARINE. Naval Evolution. S.l.n.d.(ca. 1780). In-fol. blue morocco, spine decorated, inner thread and teeth, gilt tr. (Hardy-Mennil). SUPERB MANUSCRIPT FROM THE END OF THE 18TH CENTURY, WITH THE ARMS OF THE COUNT OF MORNAY-SOULT. it consists of 184 pp. in-fol. plus 20 pp. n. chiff. for the title and the table, carefully calligraphed in block letters, illustrated with 286 original drawings of warships of the period plus numerous of the period plus numerous flags and diagrams of evolution, all admirably drawn in pen. This precious and artistic document has no equivalent in the Libraries or Archives of the Navy or in the National Library. The author says in his preface: "Since my arrival from the Indies in Oct. 1772...my main occupation has been to visit the naval tactics of Monsieur de Morogue, the Evolutions of Monsieur d'Orvillier and several other great officers". He says elsewhere: "40 years in the service of His Majesty, without interruption, 27 long-distance campaigns, not including several coastal voyages, have given me all the necessary knowledge that the Navy requires. The arms of the Count of Mornay-Soult are stamped in the center of the binding; the book later passed into the library of M. de la Germonière (2nd sale, June 3, 1966, No. 365).
