MARINE. - BERTHOUD (Ferdinand). A treatise on marine clocks, containing the theory, construction, workmanship of these machines, and the way to test them, in order to arrive, by their means, to rectify marine charts, and to determine longitudes at Sea. In Paris, by Musier fils, 1773. Fort in-4, red morocco, spine with 5 ornamented nerves, 3 threads on the boards and arms in the centre, small dent in the cover. and arms in the centre, small inner tooth, gilt tr. (Rel. anc.) Very fine and rare work, decorated with 27 engraved folding plates. Copy in exceptional condition, on large paper, WITH THE ARMS OF ABBE JOSEPH-MARIE TERRAY (Olivier, pl. 553, iron I), friend and protégé of Mme de Pompadour, controller general of finances, minister of state, then director and general authorizer of the King's buildings. The dedication to Louis XV is accompanied by a very nice header vignette, engraved by Choffard, after Cochin, with a medallion portrait of the king, marine ink, mathematical instruments, boats, etc.
