AMERVAL (Eloi d').
Paris, Alain Loctrian, s. d. (ca. 1520). In-4 gothic, fawn calf, spine ornamented, small dent, interior Greek, tr. gilt. (Bound around 1810). Third edition, very rare, of this very important poem written in the 15th century. The title, in red and black, is adorned with two vignettes, separated but joined; on the verso of the last preliminary ff. and on the verso of the last ff. a repeated woodcut. A cheerful and subtle work in which Satan, an old devil, explains the world to Lucifer, a young imp. One of the most interesting books of the beginning of the 16th century, as it introduces us to many of the popular customs and usages of that time. The author reviews all the vices and faults of men: merchants, tradesmen, innkeepers, butchers, tavern keepers, apothecaries, judges, lawmen, monks. It shows us how they deceive and trick others. It also contains the first known testimony about François Villon (see chapter LXVIII). A VERY PURE EXAMPLE, from the libraries of Yemeniz (1867, no. 1701), de Backer (1926, no. 139, reprod.) and Guy Bechtel (1978, no. 18, reprod.).
