Henri DUPARC. MANUSCRIT MUSICAL autograph signed, Aux Étoile - Lot 57
Henri DUPARC. MANUSCRIT MUSICAL autograph signed, Aux Étoiles; title and 7 pages in-fol. Version for piano four hands of this piece for orchestra. The manuscript is carefully written in black ink, on two bifeuillets of paper with 6 systems of 2 staves, under another bifeuillet serving as a titled folder. It was used for the engraving of the edition at Rouart-Lerolle in 1911. The title page is signed "H. Duparc". At the top of the first page, Duparc inscribed: "Music by Henri Duparc", and the dedication: "A Francisco de Lacerda". At the end of the manuscript, in a later handwriting, Duparc inscribed the following inscription for Jeanne Neyron de Méons: "To my beloved little Jeanne - a memento of her old friend, who loves her as much as if she were his own daughter. H. Duparc". This short piece was originally part of a Poème nocturne for orchestra in three parts, given on 11 April 1874 to the Société Nationale de Musique, and later destroyed; Aux étoiles was the first piece, which was to be performed in 1895 in Pau at Francis Planté's concerts. Having found the draft of this "little intermission" in September 1909, Henri Duparc reworked it at the request of the conductor Francisco de Lacerda, for his concerts in Montreux, and produced this version for four hands. The score is preceded by this epigraph by Father Gratry: "The sidereal light of the nights! Who can know the secret virtues of this light so humble, but coming from the immensity? » The 3/4 piece is marked "Slow and Soft" and consists of 80 bars. This beautiful nocturne is a "hymn to the night, a mystical confession of an ardent soul" (Nancy Van der Elst).
