Henri DUPARC. MANUSCRIT MUSICAL autograph signed, Benedicat - Lot 52
Henri DUPARC. MANUSCRIT MUSICAL autograph signed, Benedicat vobis Dominus, Motet à trois voix, [1883]; title and 5 pages in fol. and 4 autograph parts of 2 pages in fol. each.
The only work of religious music by Duparc, written for the wedding of Gabriel Fauré.
With the exception of a Hail Mary of 1866 which he destroyed, it is Duparc's only religious work, and his only choral work. For three voices and organ, this motet was composed for the wedding of Gabriel Fauré and Marie Frémiet in the church of the Madeleine on March 28, 1883; the manuscript dedicated to Fauré is kept in the Gabriel Fauré collection of the BnF.
The text was borrowed from the Latin text of the wedding Mass: "Benedicat vobis Dominum ex Sion" .
The piece is written for three voices: Soprano, Tenor and Baritone, and Organ. Marked Larghetto, at 4/4, in A flat, it counts 57 measures.
The present manuscript, preserved by Duparc, has been very carefully noted in brown ink on two bifold sheets of Lard-Esnault paper with 3 systems of 5 staves, the first sheet serving as title and signed "H. Duparc"; it is also signed at the end "H. Duparc". Duparc" at the end. In a later handwriting, Duparc added at the top of the title page this dedication (dated by Mrs. Duparc on May 25, 1917) to her son Charles: "to my tender memory Charles H. Duparc".
The work had been replayed in Vevey, on October 19, 1909, for the marriage of her eldest son Charles (1872-1940) to Miss Suzanne Pasquier de Franclieu. Duparc also wrote in his own hand the three vocal parts (each on a double-sided page), each signed at the top: Soprano, Tenor, Baritone. He also noted the organ part on the two inner pages of a bifeuillet.
Enclosed is the manuscript of a cello part by an unidentified hand, doubling the organ melody (2 pages on the back of a "basse Chapuis" work, with a note indicating that "Debussy found it very well written").
