Hortense ALLART (1801-1879). L.A., Herblay... - Lot 1 - Ferri & Associés
Hortense ALLART (1801-1879). L.A., Herblay Saturday [1847], at SAINTE-BEUVE; 3 pages and a half in-4, address. Nice letter. "It seems to me that I have told you many unpleasant things. Allow me, therefore, to compliment you on these charming articles about the Greeks. How full of taste, knowledge and grace! These are the letters as heard by people who are really in love with the muses...". She comments on these articles, sometimes praising, sometimes criticizing such and such a passage... She acknowledges that "there is a certain audacity in expressing myself as I do in front of a master such as you, but it is because I believe you are the first today that I dare to make this rather silly and shy criticism. I repeat, in these portraits one feels a writer above his subject, who is having fun, who is wasting his time. ...] You spoke well of Pascal, Montaigne, Milton, Bacon, your glances at all that is great, by the way, are worthy of the best writers, so go to the top since you can, it's a duty when you can. Port-Royal was already great only in intervals, but it was where it was beautiful that you are the best " .
