APOLLINAIRE (Guillaume). Le Bestiaire ou Cortège d'Orphée, i - Lot 151
APOLLINAIRE (Guillaume). Le Bestiaire ou Cortège d'Orphée, illustrated with woodcuts by Raoul Dufy. Paris, Deplanche, 1911. Large in-4, garnet marocco, spine and boards decorated with lyres and sets of cold fillets, buckskin endpapers, gilt on witnesses, covers (Paul Bonet). ORIGINAL EDITION, illustrated with 39 original woodcuts by RAOUL DUFY, 30 of them full-page. Collection of thirty poems by Apollinaire, fifteen of which appear in their original editions, the other fifteen having appeared in 1908 in La Phalange. The poems are followed by notes by the author. After soliciting Picasso who was in no hurry to execute the illustration, Apollinaire turned to Dufy, who completed the task more quickly. Limited edition of 122 numbered copies, signed by the poet and the artist, this one of the 29 copies of the first edition on Japon impérial paper (no. 25), to which was added, bound afterwards, Le Bestiaire ou Cortège d'Orphée. Supplément. Les deux poèmes refusés, Paris, Aux dépens d'un amateur, 1931. Supplement intended to be included with the first copies, illustrated with five woodcuts by Raoul Dufy, including two full-page ones, a title vignette, a cul-de-lampe and an initials, accompanying Le Condor and Le Morpion, poèmes refusés. Unique edition on Japon impérial paper, limited to 29 numbered copies and a few unnumbered copies, of which this is a contributor's copy. PRECIOUS UNIQUE EXEMPLAIRE, enriched with the following items: 1. The complete series of 30 large original woodcuts in superb trial proofs, smoked and printed without any text, on Chine volant, one (Le Hibou) signed in pencil, another annotated by the artist. A small woodblock concluding the work is also included, 2. 7 proofs of 6 large unpublished woodcuts, 3. A fairly large woodcut (Nude), a medium-format cul-de-lampe and two small woodcuts, all on Chine volant, also unpublished (the last two bearing the Atelier stamp) or variants (the woodcut of Le Dromadaire being in two proofs, one in black, the other enhanced with color, and the subject completed by Dufy, 4. Publisher's leaflets announcing the publication of both works. We know that no sequel was printed for these works, and that the essays printed by Dufy himself were only printed in very rare proofs (2 or 3 for the most part), shared between the artist and the author, with Apollinaire receiving only a few. THE PRESENT SUITE, THE ONLY COMPLETE SUITE KNOWN, IS THAT PRESERVED BY RAOUL DUFY, who composed a handwritten title for it, preserved and bound before the first proof of the series. SPECTACULAR DECORATED BINDING BY PAUL BONET. Carteret, Illustr. P. Bonet, n° 1647.
