VERLAINE (Paul). Confessions. Autobiographical notes. Portra - Lot 143
VERLAINE (Paul). Confessions. Autobiographical notes. Portrait by Anquetin. P., Publications du "Fin de Siècle", 1895. In-12, garnet half-maroq, 5-rib spine, corners, gilt head, untrimmed, covers and spine cons. (Alix). ORIGINAL EDITION. ONE OF 30 COPIES ON HOLLANDE PAPER. The first part of these autobiographical notes appeared as a serial in Fin de Siècle from September to November 1894. The second part, hitherto unpublished, closes with Verlaine's meeting with Rimbaud [September 10, 1871]. Death prevented Verlaine from writing the planned sequel. The text is interspersed with verses and poems the poet once wrote for his fiancée, Mathilde Mauté, and for her mother. IN THIS EXAMPLE, VERLAINE'S AUTOGRAPHIC INK SIGNATURE IS BELOW HIS PORTRAIT and not on the justification. A fine copy, perfectly bound by Alix. Vicaire VII, 1000; Montel, pp. 100-103; Van Bever & Monda, pp. 58-59; Carteret Romantique II, p. 434; Paul Verlaine, Oeuvres en prose complètes, Pléiade, p. 1504.
