Large in-8, full violet morocco binding, framed in rocaille irons with a reproduction of the frontispiece portrait of a woman in the center of each plate, spine decorated with small irons, interleaved teeth, white moire endpapers, gilt tr. cover illustrated in gold with a portrait of a woman in an arabesque frame (publisher's binding). First illustrated edition and first printing of the illustration. Steel-engraved portrait of the author, 12 hors-texte plates printed on a tinted background and some 100 wood-engraved vignettes in the text after Tony Johannot. A very fine copy, in an exceptionally fresh romantic decorated binding.
