GAVARNI. Montagnards of the French and Spanish Pyrenees. A Bannières, au Muséum des Pyrénées, Paris-Londres, Rittner, 1839. In-4, dark blue long-grain half-maroq, corners, gold thread, eb, illus. covers on boards (contemporary binding). Suite of 24 lithographs colored at the time with captions in French and Spanish, numbered 1 to 24, delivery cover on lithographed buff paper bearing a vignette in black: Montaneses de la frontera de Francia. A very rare early work by Gavarni. The plates are unsigned, but bear Lemercier's lithograph in the lower right-hand corner, and Rittner's two addresses. This suite, one of Gavarni's first, is extremely rare (Colas, 1191). An exceptionally fine copy (Armelhaut and Bocher, nos. 2306 to 2329, do not describe the illustrated cover that this copy possesses).
