FIRST ISSUE: frontispiece and 25 hors-texte plates by Célestin Nanteuil, Decamps, Barye, Johannot, Paul Huet, Cabat, Gigoux, Eug. Delacroix, P. Marilhat
ONE OF THE EXTREMELY RARE COPIES RESERVED FOR COLLABORATORS CONTAINING THE 25 PL. EN EPREUVES D'EAU-FORTE, avant la lettre, sur Chine fixé (a double suite in transfer on stone by Delaunois has been added to our copy). Here is what Philippe Burty wrote on a flyleaf of his ex. This Salon by Alexandre Decamps, the painter's brother, is one of the extremely rare copies (I know of only three) containing the original etching proofs instead of the lithographic transfer, which is deceptive in its perfection. The etchings by Barye and Delacroix have never been printed separately, and can therefore only be found in these elite copies". Delacroix's etching, on Chine avant lettre and transferred to stone, is as follows: Rencontre de Cavaliers Maures, 1834, no. 23 by Delteil, "printed in small numbers".
A superb copy with the author's dedication, to which the following pieces have been added:
1. A charming painting (oriental scene in a mountainous landscape), signed by Prosper Marilhat (1811 1847), master of the genre, fixed to the inside of the first cover of the binding and serving as lining.
2. An original pen-and-ink sketch by David (study for a painting).
3. The very fine original drawing by Célestin Nanteuil (1813 1873) of the frontispiece to the present work (from the Beurdeley collection) and an original signed watercolor.
4. Two colored pencil drawings by Pierre Andrieu (1821 1892), friend and pupil of Delacroix.
5. A very fine bistre wash drawing by Alexandre Decamps (1803 1860) with pen sketch on verso.
6. A sheet of sketches attributed to Eug. Delacroix (1798 1863): horse and head study.
7. Eight portraits of the artists mentioned in the book, engraved or lithographed by J. Gigoux, most in Chine or avant la lettre proofs, from the Beurdeley collection.
Brivois copy, since bound.
