A large number of plates in this copy, truly made for himself by the director of this famous publication, bear notes in his own hand, completing or giving the names of the characters portrayed. In addition, each volume contains, at the beginning in Philipon's hand and in ink on blank pages, an explanation of the plates, the prosecutions and convictions they may have provoked, and the motives behind the creation and demise of the publication. Carteret, in his "Trésor du bibliophile" (t.3) devotes three pages (124 to 126) to the notes accompanying this precious copy, adding: "que nous avons eu la sottise de ne pas conserver"! EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION. The copy, with full margins, is perfectly preserved, despite unavoidable foxing to some pages; text pages uniformly foxed at the end of the publication, as always. A war machine against Louis-Philippe's regime that had to endure censorship throughout its existence. La Caricature ceased publication in August 1835, victim of a law re-establishing censorship, announced in the last issue. Ref: Vicaire T. II, col. 46 to 81; Delt eil 40 to 130.
