In folio (406 x 270 mm) with 116 copper-engraved plates enhanced in watercolor, bound in long-grained red half-maroquin, corners, smooth spine decorated, n. r. (Binding circa 1870).
False-title, title and 24 pp. of Observations sur les modes et les usages de Paris, which explain the 115 plates.
ILLUSTRATION: the 116 plates (pl. 39 is double) are divided into 105 copper engravings forming the first edition of 1817, all printed on fine laid paper, characteristic of early editions, with the exception of 9 plates printed on wove paper (pl. 55, 56, 59, 60, 71, 72, 75, 76, 86), and 11 additional plates forming the edition of 1822, all printed on laid paper, with the exception of pl. 110 printed on wove paper.
ALL THE COPPER ENGRAVINGS HAVE BEEN ENHANCED WITH THE FINEST CONTEMPORARY COLORING. These engravings of the mores, costumes and entertainments of the Empire and Restoration periods by Gatine, Schenker and others were based on drawings by C. Vernet, Debucourt, Isabey, Lanté, Dutailly and others.
Provenance:
- Montgermont (1913, No. 264),
- Princesse Murat (1921),
- Lemallier.
(Freckles, mainly on text; slight scuffing to binding).
This famous collection of plates is rare, especially when it has such large margins as this copy. Most of those we come across show some form of heterogeneity in the paper used for the plates, the vast majority of which are printed here on laid paper, a mark of the first state.
A BEAUTIFUL EXEMPLAIRE, WITH ALL MARGES, AND IN BEAUTIFUL EPOQUE COLOR, WELL COMPLETE WITH 115 PLATES and also containing pl. 39bis: L es Titus et les cache-folies (published in the 1822 editions).
Colas, 2240; Vicaire, I, 842.
