AMERIQUE PITTORESQUE (L'). WILLIS (N.P.) - BARTLETT (W.H.) L - Lot 44
AMERIQUE PITTORESQUE (L'). WILLIS (N.P.) - BARTLETT (W.H.) L'Amérique Pittoresque ou Vues des Terres, des Lacs et des Fleuves des Etats-Unis d'Amérique. Enriched with engravings based on drawings by Mr. W.H. Bartlett... The literary part by N.P. Willis. Translated from the English by L. de Bauclas. London, Georges Virtue, Paris, Ferrier, 1840. 2 volumes in-4, blue chagrin, smooth spine and boards decorated with gold "Rocaille" and cold irons, interior thread, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Very fine work, with portrait, 2 engraved title-frontispices and 119 hors-texte steel engravings (including 1 map), each protected by a serpente. An accomplished English landscape artist initially trained in architectural drawing, Bartlett produced romantic views inherited from the aesthetics of Turner and Constable; moreover, most of the engravers who worked with Bartlett had been trained by Turner. Bartlett visited North America four times: in 1836-1837, in 1838, in 1841 and in 1852. A remarkably fresh copy in full Romanesque binding (inf. staining to qq. ff.). Exceptional condition.
