Pet. in-8, red maroq., middles and corners decorated with gilt small-iron foliage, spine with 54 small-iron decorated nerves, lined with light green maroq., framed with lace, small black embossed armorial mark on gilt escutcheon in center, green moiré silk endpapers, tr. dor. sur marbrure (Lortic).
VERY BEAUTIFUL AND RARISSIVE EXAMPLE OF THE ORIGINAL EDITION, IN RICH AND FINE BINDING BY LORTIC, only the Hymne de France had appeared as a separate booklet in 1849.
This collection is entirely different from the one published under the same title following the 1550 edition of the Odes. The title, with woodcut mark, is decorated on the verso with a full-page portrait of Ronsard.
There are three Bocage ronsardiens: the one at the end of the 1550 Odes and the Bocage royal of the 1584 collective edition. The latter, dated 1554, consists of forty-seven previously unpublished poems. The mythological erudition of the Odes and Amours is contrasted with the lightness of pieces in which the poet sings of nature, the frog, the ant, a nightingale, a Vaneur de blé au vent Zephire. Twelve sonnets and one elegy deal with love.
