PRINTING. FOURNIER (P.-S.), the young. Manuel typographique, - Lot 21
PRINTING. FOURNIER (P.-S.), the young. (Contemporary binding).
The manual typographique is the most complete treatise on type casting and engraving. It is illustrated with 2 copper-engraved frontispieces by Fessard after De Sève and Gravelot and, in Volume I, 16 engraved fold-out plates. Volume II is a catalog of all typefaces, vignettes, miscellaneous signs and music signs used in printing, from the author's foundry and those of some of his French and foreign colleagues named in the preface.
Pierre-Simon Fournier dit le jeune (1712-1768), a scholar and printing technician, came from a family of typographers in business since the 16th century.
This is the best text on the subject, according to André Jammes, who also points out that the technical aspect of this Manual has not put off bibliophiles, who have at all times included this book in their precious cabinets.
A VERY FINE COPY PRINTED ON HOLLANDE PAPER IN CONTEMPORARY BINDING.
