"Danaïde is a work that fits into this reflection on beauty and feminine delicacy. It has no known model, apart from the title's evocation of the character from Greek mythology.
In the photographs of this black-patinated Danaïde ( ), Brancusi emphasizes the illuminated parts, linking this work with the 1913 bronze of the first Mlle Pogany, seen from three-quarters up. This parallel reveals the discreet tension ( ) between the circle and the oval - an oval that was to become the essential element of subsequent versions of Mlle Pogany."
